In the Biblical book of Genesis is the story of creation. God created the heavens and the earth, and Adam to live in the Garden of Eden.  Adam had everything he needed and was content and happy.

Then God said it was not good for man to be alone and that He would make a helper for Adam. God knew Adam had a missing part of his life, but Adam did not, so God began to create a situation which would indirectly reveal it to him.

Interestingly, the action God took was to first make animals and bring them to Adam to see what he would name them. As the animals came, I believe they came to him male and female, causing Adam to note the difference between a lion and lioness, a rooster and a hen, a bull and a cow. These examples stood in contrast to Adam who did not have a mate. As all of the animals came to be named, God was awakening a desire in Adam for a mate, whom He subsequently made and presented to him.

A Measure of Discontent

Similarly, there are times when we become aware that something is missing in our lives, and we have a measure of discontent. Often times, a person seeks out a coach because of the desire to bring some aspect of life into greater balance, harmony, and fruitfulness.  She may decide it is finally time to work on physical fitness, or he may want to be a better steward of his God-given talents.

At times, it is the coach who becomes aware of an overlooked aspect of a client’s life which she does not seem to notice and therefore, can ask questions to bring attention to it as the beginning of a more-rounded and healthier lifestyle.

All Things Not Being Equal

Although there is always room for improvement, a balanced and harmonious life is one in which all categories of life are satisfactory to the individual. A coach may use a tool such as the Wheel of Life for the client to assess his personal contentment in the major areas of life:

  • Work
  • Church/Ministry
  • Spiritual Life
  • Personal Development
  • Physical Stewardship
  • Hobbies & Recreation
  • Pace of Life
  • Living Environment
  • Financial Stewardship
  • Family & Children
  • Marriage/Single Life
  • Social Stewardship

Each of these areas demands varying amounts of time and attention at different seasons. By illustration, the simple act of walking involves shifting the weight back and forth to remain upright and moving forward. A sick child at home, for example, will require more care, and so some other area must yield.

The balance comes in the ebb and flow, the give and take, according to our values and life circumstances. If we are unclear on our values, we will be frustrated, even if we are getting a lot of things done.

A Coach in Your Corner

Coaching provides that relationship dynamic in which the client invites an outside perspective from a co-laborer to encourage, support, and help him stay on track. A coach can help you identify your values, see the big picture, and progress towards a happier, healthier lifestyle, as you juggle your various roles and responsibilities.

Perhaps at this time, God is also awakening your desire for positive change by hinting at or showing you what you are missing. Rather than stew in frustration, you can work with a coach to see what God is after, and how to make the changes that will work for you.
