Developing Coaches in the Church: Part 2 by Brian Rhen

In the Spring of 2007, I asked for “Coaching” to be put on the agenda a week prior to our next senior pastoral staff meeting. Then I got really scared. My colleagues on the senior staff knew I was into this “new coaching thing,” but it was still just my thing that I had been getting trained on and theorizing about a lot. I was fearful that they would not take me seriously. But then something wonderful happened...

Dancing with the Lord, by Ginny Victory

Once on the dance floor, the instructor turns to me and presents the frame for our dance. He explains that I must both press in and lay back - rest - in his hold. It is the tension of this shape and my trust in him that allows us to communicate. The same is true with the Lord; it is in the drawing near to Him that He draws near to me. Then I know Him, His purposes and His ways.

Another was coaching in New Zealand and not seeing a lot going on with coaching there--I'm sure it would have been a great encouragement to connect him with other leaders in his nation with the same passion...

How important is it to get your Pastor's blessing up front if you hope to start a coaching ministry in your church? It's IMPERATIVE!! It is not wise to try to introduce something as life-changing and paradigm-busting as coaching to a congregation without the Senior Pastor's agreement. But "selling" coaching to your pastor is not a job for the faint-of-heart. It can be a very challenging business.
