Seven Introductory Coaching Resources by Linda Hedberg

Here are seven great resources – a starting place – for the prospective Christian coach.  Learn what coaching is.  Learn about Christian coaching specifically.  Learn what is going on in the field.  Start your journey by gaining wisdom and knowledge about the profession and ministry of coaching.

1. Christian Coaching:  Turning Potential into Reality by Gary R. Collins.  This is the classic book on Christian coaching – a very informative introduction to the field.  Collins’ book has been a standard recommendation to prospective and new Christian coaches since it was first published in 2001.

2. A Crash Course in Christian Coaching DVD or CD (2007) by Christopher McCluskey.  This excellent resource brings a thorough up-to-date overview of the profession to the viewing screen.  Christian coaching pioneer, Christopher McCluskey, delivers an interesting, informative primer on the field.  Available at www.coach22.com.

3. Complete Guide to Christian Coach Training by Linda Hedberg.   This new resource (2008) orients the reader to coaching and identifies certifications and training options.  11 decision making factors for how to choose a training program and information on 13 Christian coach training programs makes this a invaluable resource to those considering training.

4. The International Coach Federation (ICF) is the oldest and largest professional association of coaches worldwide.   Though certainly not a Christian organization, it has undeniably shaped the profession of coaching in our world.  Learn about the profession at http://www.coachfederation.org/.

5. The Christian Coaches Network (CCN), a professional association of Christian coaches, has been around since 1998.  Investigate the world of Christian coaching by visiting www.christiancoaches.com.

6. Co-active Coaching:  New Skills for Coaching People Toward Success in Work and Life by Whitworth et al. This is a very commonly used coaching textbook.  Though not a Christian book, it is often taught and studied from a Christian perspective.  Available at www.coach22.com.

7.  Leadership Coaching:  The Disciplines, Skills and Heart of a Christian Coach by Tony Stoltzfus. This book reflects Stoltzfus’ experience as a coach trainer and curriculum writer.  It emphasizes classic coaching skills and techniques and integrates biblical concepts and a Christian world view.  Available at www.coach22.com.
